JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – Illinois College freshman running back
Trevor Smalls was named the Midwest Conference Offensive Performer of the Week on Monday after putting on a show in IC's 56-17 throttling of Cornell College.
The Vandalia, Ill. native came into Saturday with 199 yards rushing through four games, but more than doubled that as he sliced through the Cornell defense time and time again. Smalls' first carry of the game resulted in a 45-yard touchdown to level the game at 7-7 with just over a minute elapsed. Less than three minutes later, he would break free for a 36-yard run into the Cornell red zone and then carry it in one play later from 16 yards out to give the Blueboys a 14-7 lead.
Early on in the second quarter, a 14-yard touchdown from Smalls gave Illinois College a 28-7 lead on the Rams. In the fourth quarter, Smalls put the game on ice with two more touchdown runs, these coming from 32 and 49 yards out. In total, Smalls carried the ball 18 times for 240 yards, an average of more than 13 yards per carry. His five rushing touchdowns came up just one shy of matching the school record of six, set in the 1914 season.
With Saturday's win, Illinois College improved to 4-1 (1-0 MWC South Division). The Blueboys go on the road on Oct. 19 for a huge divisional contest, taking on Monmouth College at 2 p.m.
