ST. LOUIS, Mo. – After more than 230 minutes of action, the Illinois College men's soccer team finally allowed its first goal of the 2017 season and unfortunately it turned out to be a decisive one as Fontbonne needed just one score to get a 1-0 win on Thursday night. The Griffins improve to 3-1-0 on the season while the Blueboys drop to 2-1-0.
Fontbonne held an 8-3 edge in total shots in the first half, but
Ty Clearwater made four saves to keep the game level. Of the three shots from Illinois College,
Ryan May forced a save from Griffins goalkeeper Jordan Alberici in the ninth minute, but the two others were not on frame.
The first chance of the second half went to Illinois College.
Roger Mies sent a shot on goal that Alberici saved two minutes in. Fontbonne then began to pile on the pressure, and it paid off in the 57th minute as David Keeven broke the tie off of an assist from Corey Schmidt. The Blueboys had just one more shot on goal, a 69th minute header from
Nick Copley that was saved to keep the Griffins in front.
Collin Basler had IC's final attempt, a shot in the 89th minute that sailed wide.
Fontbonne ended with a 14-8 edge in total shots. Clearwater made six saves. May led all players in the match with four total shots.
Illinois College returns to England Stadium on Sept. 9, facing Dominican University (Ill.) in a 1 p.m. first kick.
