JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – There's a reason you play hard up to the final whistle. The Illinois College men's soccer team was living proof of that on Wednesday night, scoring with less than 20 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime and earn a 1-1 draw with Fontbonne University.
Ryan May was the scorer of the goal while
Brock Ziegemeier had the assist.
Neither team showed much of a pulse in the first 45 minutes. In the first half, each team had one shot and neither was on target to trouble keepers
Ty Clearwater and Tony Pitaro.
In the second half, Illinois College would outshoot Fontbonne by an 11-4 margin, but it was the Griffins who went ahead in the 73rd minute as Greg Ferry trundled home an Austin Willenbrock cross for Fontbonne's first goal of the season in its fourth match.
The Blueboys began to mount pressure in the final minute of regulation. First, a corner kick from
Mesfin Lenth resulted in a
Thomas Saitta shot that was saved by Pitaro. Just a few seconds later, Lenth again had a corner and this one came first to Ziegemeier and then May to deliver the tying score with 17 seconds left.
After a lengthy weather delay, the teams couldn't put much together in overtime. Illinois College did not attempt a shot on goal and Fontbonne had four, but Clearwater made two saves and the match ended all square at 1-1.
Illinois College (0-1-1) will travel this weekend and play Concordia University (Chicago) in a match slated for a 2 p.m. kickoff on Sept. 11.
