JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College men's soccer team put an exclamation point on a successful home weekend, going off for a season-high four goals in an emphatic 4-1 victory over Beloit College. The win was the second in as many days for the Blueboys, who improve to 3-8-3 (2-4-0 Midwest Conference). The loss sinks the Buccaneers to 6-6-1 (1-4-1 MWC) on the season.
The scoring started for Illinois College in the 28th minute. After putting heavy pressure on the Beloit goal throughout much of the first half-hour,
Roger Mies picked a spot from 25 yards out and hit it perfectly to beat Jere Bauer and send the Blueboys to the half with a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, Illinois College benefitted from a defensive breakdown from the Buccaneers. In the 57th minute an
Alexis Zazueta cross deflected off a Beloit defender and over the outstretched arms of Bauer to double IC's lead to 2-0.
Illinois College essentially put the match away in the 68th minute. The referee called a foul in the 18-yard box and
Mesfin Lenth slotted the penalty home to make it 3-0.
Nick Copley added a fourth in the 74th minute on a
Nick Roth assist. Beloit was able to get one back in the closing minutes as another penalty was given and Martin Garrett-Curie scored from the spot to spoil IC's hopes of a shutout.
The Blueboys outshot Beloit, 14-4, in the match. Lenth, Zazueta and
Brock Chartier had three shots apiece for IC. In goal,
Ty Clearwater made three saves to earn the win.
Illinois College will play its final non-conference match of the season on Oct. 20 with a 7 p.m. meeting against Westminster College in Fulton, Mo.
