History Made: Lady Blues Win Conference Title for First Time

MONMOUTH, Ill. –
For the first time in school history, the Illinois College Women's Track and Field team is the champion of the Midwest Conference as it captured the team title at the annual Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Huff Athletic Center on Saturday.

The Lady Blues scored 137 points, overtaking Monmouth, who scored 135.5, in the last event of the championships. The victory ended a streak of three straight titles by Ripon.

IC's march to the title started in the 60-meter dash when Haley Garrett won the event in 7.90 seconds. Deja Anderson (7.99) was third, Fynesse Jones (8.08) was fifth, and McKenzie Murray (8.10) was sixth.

The 200-meter dash saw the Lady Blues rack up more points as Garrett became a two-time individual champion, breaking the tape in 25.94 seconds. Murray (26.22) was second, Jones (26.23) was third, and Aleese Trimingham (26.79) was sixth.

Trimingham then cruised to the title in the 60-meter hurdles, posting a blistering 9.16-second effort.

IC's 4x200-meter relay team of Garrett, Brooke Oakley, Jones, and Anderson won the event with a sparkling 1:47.0 effort.

The championship title came down to the final event and IC's foursome of Kami Rhoades, Murray, Jones, and Oakley broke the tape in the 4x400 meter relay in a time of 4:04.16 and the Lady Blues were conference champions.

The winning wasn't restricted solely to the track and field. The IC coaching staff was named the Coaching Staff of the Year as well.

IC also got points from Maddie Benson who was the runner-up in the pole vault, clearing 3.40 meters. Oakley was second in the 400-meter dash in 1:01.32 and third in the high jump as she cleared 1.53 meters. 

The Lady Blues weight throw tandem of Natalie Hastings (fifth place with a 14.60-meter mark) and Kevlynn DeJaynes (seventh place with a 13.50 mark) also contributed valuable points in the title drive.
