GALESBURG, Ill. – The Illinois College women's tennis team only traveled four players to Knox College on Tuesday afternoon, but those four were enough for the Lady Blues to shrug off the three-point deficit inflicted upon them and emerge with a 5-4 victory over the Prairie Fire. With the win, IC improves to 3-6 (2-4 Midwest Conference) on the season.
Without a No. 3 doubles team or Nos. 5 and 6 singles players, Illinois College started off the match with a 3-0 deficit. The Lady Blues immediately sliced into that deficit with emphatic wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles. The pairings of
Sally Hixson and
Sophia Roth at No. 1 and
Madelyn Deardorff and
Kalisa Goertz at No. 2 each won their doubles matches by scores of 8-0.
Moving into singles, Hixson drew a tough assignment at No. 1 against Bhumika Gupta and fell by scores of 6-1, 6-1. That was the fourth point for Knox and left them on the precipice of victory, but Illinois College stormed back with wins from Roth, Goertz and Deardorff to complete the comeback. At No. 2, Roth took down Himani Patel, 6-1, 6-2. In the No. 3 singles match, Goertz defeated Kathryn Allee, 6-0, 6-2. Finally, Deardorff shutout Mallory Boychuk at No. 4, 6-0, 6-0.
Illinois College returns to action tomorrow with another road match, taking on Monmouth College at 4:30 p.m.
