By: The IC men’s soccer team limited Coe throughout the night and took advantage of Joe Tooley’s 71st minute strike to win the opener of the 2014 season.
Box Score CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Illinois College men's soccer team weathered a storm and also the Coe Kohawks on Friday night, coming away with a 1-0 win to begin
Tyler Sheikh's tenure as head coach of the Blueboys. A lightning storm delayed the contest by about an hour after only 18 minutes had been played, but IC gave a determined effort throughout and were rewarded when
Joe Tooley slashed in and netted the game-winner in the 71st minute.
A scoreless first half did nothing to separate the two sides. Illinois College managed five shots on goal to Coe's three, but the Kohawks put two of those on frame while the Blueboys only had one shot on goal to that point.
The second half began to show the difference between the sides, with IC looking the more dangerous team throughout. It started early on as Anthony Williard forced a save from Coe goalkeeper Eric Hoar in the first five minutes after the restart.
Even though the Blueboys held a 9-4 shot advantage after halftime, it took something special from Tooley to finally break the deadlock. His nifty run through the heart of the Coe defense took the fight out of the Kohawks and the defense did the rest from there. Coe wouldn't manage another shot the rest of the match.
Five saves from
Scott Workman gave the junior his fifth career shutout.
Josue Hernandez led IC with five shots, while Tooley had three and Williard added two.
Illinois College goes for a weekend sweep tomorrow afternoon, facing Iowa Wesleyan at 3 p.m. in Mount Pleasant.
