JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College Esports team captured the MVEC Super Smash Bros. Ultimate championship on Sunday, winning the MVEC Conference Tournament inside King Fieldhouse on the campus of Illinois College.
Entering the tournament as the No. 2 seed, Illinois College turned in a dominant performance against the top competition in the conference. The Blueboys defeated Wartburg 2-0 in the quarterfinals and Cornell 2-0 in the semifinals to advance to the upper finals.
Awaiting them was No. 1 seed Buena Vista, which had not lost a match all season. Illinois College handed Buena Vista its first loss of the year with a 2-0 victory in the upper finals, setting up a rematch in the grand finals.
In the championship round, the Blueboys secured the title with a 2-1 win over Buena Vista. Illinois College finished the day with an 8-1 overall game record, winning four consecutive matches against the top teams in the conference.
Jake Petrovich and Julian Luaders paced Illinois College throughout the tournament with steady performances from start to finish, while Adam Byrd, Devin Ussery, and Alex Rhoades provided key contributions in the team's championship run. Over the final five games of bracket play, spanning the upper finals and grand finals, Petrovich recorded a dominant 15-0 stock run against Buena Vista's best player and one of the best players in the conference, and finished the series with a K/F ration of 18.0. Across all four matches on the day, the Blueboys' lineup of Petrovich, Luaders, Byrd, Ussery, and Rhoades combined for a complete team effort in securing the title.
The championship marks the first MVEC or MEC title in program history. After years of pursuing a regional championship, Illinois College Esports broke through on its home stage, adding a historic milestone to the program's resume.
