JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College esports team delivered one of its most dominant performances of the season Tuesday night, sweeping Saint Benedict & Saint John 2–0 in NECC Super Smash Bros. Ultimate action.
The Blueboys left no doubt from the start, taking Game 1 by a 4–0 margin before overwhelming their opponent 7–0 in Game 2 to complete the sweep.
The night belonged to Devin Ussery, who turned in the best performance of his collegiate career. Ussery tied Julian for the most KOs in a regular-season performance in program history — and did so in just two games, while Julian reached the mark in three.
In Game 1, Ussery immediately seized control by taking five stocks, setting the tone early and helping Illinois College close out the win with four stocks remaining.
If the first game was dominant, the second was historic. Ussery erupted for 11 stocks in Game 2 alone, nearly wiping the entire opposing lineup by himself. He was finally eliminated late by Saint Benedict & Saint John's top player on King K. Rool, but by that point the match was well in hand.
Jake Petrovich and Adam Byrd provided steady support throughout the sweep, combining for seven KOs and consistently maintaining pressure, while Alex Rhoades added a key stock in the victory.
The performance marks one of the highest single-match ceilings the Blueboys have shown this season and provides a significant boost as postseason play approaches.
