JACKSONVILLE, Ill.- The Illinois College volleyball team got the regular season off to a perfect start on Saturday with a pair of victories in its home tournament at Sherman Gymnasium.
IC opened the day with a 3-0 win over Blackburn and then outlasted Adrian, 3-2, in the day's final match.
Match 1: Illinois College 3 Blackburn 0
The Lady Blues picked up their first win of the season and gave head coach Claire Sully her first collegiate win as head coach. IC was strong throughout the entirety of the match and took the opening two sets by a combined score of 50-26. The third set came down to the wire, but IC finished off the match, 25-22.
Ligaya Garibay started her senior season campaign right where she left off last season, tallying nine kills and ten total points.
Laura Kaiser and
Riley Drake were also standouts as the duo combined for 15 kills.
Abby Buchanan-Kenzinger ended with four aces and senior setter
Summer Brandis dished out 18 assists.
Match 2: Illinois College 3, Adrian 2
IC survived a nailbiter in the last match of the tournament. The Lady Blues won the opening set 25-17 before Adrian roared back and took the next two. The fourth set was tied at 24 before IC rattled off two straight points to force a fifth and deciding set. The Lady Blues played a strong fifth set to take the match. As she was in the opening match, Garibay was a strong presence for IC as she ad 15 kills. Kaiser added 12 kills and four points off blocks while Brandis added another 25 assists. Â
Riley Drake recorded a match-high six aces for IC.Â

The Lady Blues will hit the road for the next two weeks, beginning with a trip to Fulton, Mo. on Tuesday to face Westminster. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
