JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - The IC volleyball team hosted Ripon College for a Midwest Conference matchup Saturday afternoon. The Lady Blues dominated the Red Hawks in straight sets by the scores of 25-20, 25-14, and 25-16. IC improves to 9-8 overall and 2-0 in the MWC.
In the opening set, IC and Ripon battled back-and-forth to a 10-10 tie. IC broke open the set with a 11-3 run that made the score 21-13.
Haylie Orton and
Ligaya Garibay each recorded two kills in the run. A late run from Ripon fell just short as Ellie Ove has an attacking error that rewarded IC with the set.
The Lady Blues jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the second set off the service hand of
Summer Brandis. In the run, Brandis added a service ace while
Paige Knuffman recorded two kills. Ripon and IC continued to battle back and forth to the 20-13 Lady Blues advantage. IC closed out the set on a 5-1 run to win the set.
In the final set, IC and Ripon battled to the score 12-11 when the Lady Blues went on a 6-0 run that started on a Knuffman kill.
Alex Johnson kept the run going with five specular serves that included a service ace. IC closed out the set and match with a 6-2 run.
Ella Middleton ended the match with a service ace.
IC was led on offense by Knuffman with 12 kills while Garibay added nine. Brandis dished out 34 assists and had three service aces. Defensively, Garibay was the all over the court as she recorded a game-high 15 digs. Orton recorded the only block for IC in the match.
The Lady Blues will travel to Boston, Massachusetts to participate in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Invitational starting on Friday, October 6 at 6:00 PM.
