IC Volleyball Splits in the First Day of the Illinois College Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, Ill.- The Illinois College Lady Blues women's volleyball team was able to split their first two games of the 2021 Illinois College volleyball tournament falling to Rose-Hulman 2-3 and defeating Concordia University Chicago 3-2. 

Game 1- Illinois College 2, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology 3

The Lady Blues took on the Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers in their first game of the home volleyball tournament. After winning the first two sets, IC fell in three straight sets to suffer a loss to the Engineers 25-16, 26-24, 19-25, 18-25, 13-15. 

The team was led on offense by three players that reached double digits in kills. Sam Sabo, Reagan Gifford, and Abbie Horstmann were able to record 10 kills each in the contest. Morgan Burr was able to set up her teammates for success totaling 36 assists. Jen Humbolt led the team on defense with 18 digs. 

Game 2- Illinois College 3, Concordia University Chicago 2

IC was seeking their first win of the season heading into their second matchup of the day against Concordia University Chicago. The Lady Blues went the distance with the Cougars ending the match after five sets with a win 25-21, 21-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-12. 

Horstmann led the team offensively with 14 kills and a .440 hitting percentage. Four more Lady Blues were able to reach double digits in kills including Faith Stallard (11), Sabo (10), Gifford (10), and Brenna Dameris (10). Burr led the team with 47 assists. The defense was led by libero Humbolt who finished the match with 29 digs. 

The match proved to be a competitive one as both teams traded sets back and forth. Illinois College stood ahead 13-11 in the fifth and final set after an attack error by Concordia Chicago. The Lady Blues were able to force another attack error by the Cougars to make the score 14-11. After a kill by Chicago, IC was able to seal the victory with a kill by Gifford on an assist from Burr to take the thrilling five set victory. 

Illinois College will look ahead to continue the home tournament tomorrow as they face Blackburn College at 11:00 AM and Olivet College at 2:30 PM.
