GRINNELL, Iowa – The Illinois College men's swimming team had an exciting new trick up its sleeve when it finally returned to action after a long lay-off this past Saturday. Freshman Davide Sanna set two new school records and sits firmly atop the Midwest Conference leaderboard in the 100 and 200 Backstroke after his times at the Panther Invitational. On Tuesday, he was named the MWC Men's Performer of the Week.

The newcomer from Alghero, Italy made quite the splash for the Blueboys at the multi-team meet that was hosted by Principia College over the weekend. In his two individual events, Sanna sheared more than three seconds off the previous Illinois College school record in the 100 Backstroke with a 51.62 and very nearly 15 seconds off the previous school record in the 200 Backstroke with a 1:54.10. Both of those times have him on the verge of qualifying times for the NCAA Division III Championships.

In two relays, Sanna did just as well. Leading off the 200 Medley Relay, he gave IC the lead in the race after 50 yards with a split of 24.24 seconds. In the day's final event, the 400 Freestyle Relay, he swam his 100 yards in a team-best 48.95 seconds.

The Illinois College swimming & diving teams return to the pool on Feb. 2, once again competing at Principia. This time, the Panthers will meet the Blueboys and Lady Blues in a dual meet, set to begin at 1 p.m.
