Box Score
GALESBURG, Ill. – The Illinois College baseball team ended its weekend at the Midwest Conference Crossover with a 1-2 record after falling to Beloit College, 5-4, in 11 innings on Sunday. With the loss, the Blueboys fall to 13-10 (4-4 MWC) on the year.
Neither team was ever able to score more than a single run in an inning, and each time Beloit took the lead, Illinois College answered right back. The Buccaneers scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning on
Dylan Jones, but
Austin Gusewelle responded with a two-out solo home run to tie the game at 1-1 heading to the second inning.
Jalen Davis manufactured a Beloit run almost by himself in the third inning. The center fielder led off with a walk and then stole second base before he was sac bunted to third base with one out. A ground ball to
Brandon Skovronski at shortstop for the second out of the inning was enough for Davis to scamper home for a 2-1 lead. Beloit held onto that lead until the bottom of the fifth when
Tim Sommerfeld singled home
Colin Edwards to once again knot the score at 2-2.
The game stayed right there until the ninth inning when Ethan Conley led off the Beloit half of the frame with a lead-off solo home run. The Blueboys refused to go down quietly though. Edwards worked a walk and
Scott Kasting came in to pinch-run. After a balk took Kasting to second, Skovronski singled him in to make it 3-3 and force the game to extras.
A two-out error in the top of the 10th inning allowed Davis to score all the way from first, but Beloit gifted IC new life by committing two errors on the same play in the bottom of the 10th inning. After Gusewelle had gotten aboard with a lead-off walk,
Dillon Hallemann reached on an error by the third baseman. The return throw from the right fielder also got away from Beloit, so Gusewelle was able to come all the way home to tie the game at 4-4.
A RBI double by Matthew Celantano in the top of the 11th once again put the Buccaneers ahead. In IC's final turn at the dish, Sommerfeld and Gusewelle kept the game alive with two-out singles, but the game ended on a groundout to third base.
Dylan Jones worked nine innings, giving up five hits and three runs (two earned), while striking out four.
Ethan Crain was tagged with his first loss of the season, falling to 1-1.
