Track & Field Battles the Elements as Outdoor Season Begins

The Blueboys and Lady Blues each finished in sixth place at the Washington University Mini Meet on Saturday, fighting through tough conditions.

ST. LOUIS, Mo.
– The Illinois College track & field teams began the outdoor portion of their schedule on Saturday in brutal conditions, placing sixth on both the men's and women's sides in the Washington University Mini Meet. The Lady Blues totaled 62 points on the day, while the Blueboys accumulated 58 points.

There were two individual event winners for Illinois College on the day, and both came through with performances that registered on the national level. Brant Bess won the men's javelin throw with a distance of 184-11 (56.36 meters), putting him seventh in Division III early in the season. Andrea Hyde claimed the title in the women's 100 Meter Dash in 12.47 seconds, putting herself into a tie for 14th nationally.

The Blueboys and Lady Blues also combined for five runner-up placements at the meet. In the women's hammer throw, Jenna Kennedy just missed on a new PR with a throw of 129-3 (39.40 meters). Ali Pankey took second in the women's high jump by clearing the bar at 4-11 (1.50 meters). For the Blueboys, Chris Moore was second in the long jump at 20-7 (6.27 meters) and Brett Peifer was the runner-up in the 200 Meter Dash in 22.31 seconds. Peifer did however end as the top collegiate finisher in the race, as the winner ran unattached. The final runner-up finish came from the men's 4 x 100 Meter Relay squad. Nife Williams, Peifer, Moore and Greg Cross had the program's fourth-fastest time in the event with a finish of 42.34 seconds.

The women's 4 x 100 Meter Relay team also had a finish that put them into the IC record books. Joselynn Allen, Bailey Leitschuh, Olivia Molette and Hyde ran the race in 49.94 seconds, ending in third place and registering the fifth-fastest time in program history. Allen also took third in the women's 200 Meter Dash in 26.59 seconds, the top Division III time in the event. Peifer was third in the men's 400 Meter Dash as well, crossing the line in 49.86 seconds.

The Lady Blues received two other top-five performances on Saturday. Madison Klanke took fourth place in the javelin throw at 72-8 (22.14 meters). Lindsay Alewelt was also fourth in the discus throw with a distance of 105-10 (32.25 meters). 

For the Blueboys, Nick Mucciante was fourth in the 110 Meter Hurdles in 16.20 seconds and Levon Hendricks was fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 41-10.5 (12.76 meters). 

Illinois College continues the outdoor season next weekend with two different meets. On March 30, part of the squad will attend the Washington University Distance Carnival starting at 4 p.m. Another part of the team will be at the first day of the two-day Lindenwood Invitational which begins at 3:30 p.m. The Lindenwood Invitational continues on March 31 at 9 a.m.
