By: Traditional powerhouses Cornell and Grinnell took two matches from the Lady Blues on Sunday, winning 17 out of a possible 18 points.
JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College women's tennis team put forth a good effort, but there was no slowing down Cornell College and Grinnell College on Sunday. The Rams took the morning match from the Lady Blues, 8-1, before the Pioneers closed the day with a 9-0 victory.
Cornell jumped ahead winning all three doubles points to begin the day. From there, wins at Nos. 1 and 3 singles closed it out.
Sally Hixson fought hard against the MWC's defending No. 1 singles champion, Julia Thome, but was defeated, 6-1, 6-0. The lone point of the day for the Lady Blues came from the No. 5 match where
Kalisa Goertz outlasted Janice Elkerton, 1-6, 6-2, 10-4.
Grinnell then swarmed IC in the afternoon, winning two of the three doubles matches at love before sweeping each of the six singles matches in straight sets. The best showing for the Lady Blues against the Pioneers came at No. 6 where
Madelyn Deardorff was a 6-2, 6-3 victim to Brenda Guan.
Now 3-7 (1-5 MWC) on the season, the Lady Blues will try to get back in the win column with a Sept. 23 match on the road at Blackburn College in Carlinville beginning at 10 a.m.
