Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College men's basketball team struggled in the first half for the second straight game, falling into a 17-point halftime hole and losing to Lake Forest College by a score of 87-72 on Saturday afternoon in Sherman Gymnasium. The Foresters shot nearly 55 percent as a team in sending the Blueboys to their third straight defeat. IC now sits at 4-9 (1-7 Midwest Conference), while Lake Forest ups its mark for the season to 7-4 (5-2 MWC).
The first five minutes of the game were played evenly. Lake Forest's Jim Schick tallied the first four points of the game, but Illinois College came back with a 7-0 run, the last five points coming from
Tim Schappaugh. After the Foresters again took a lead at 8-7,
David Bauer put the Blueboys back ahead with a three-pointer that made it 10-8 with 15:21 remaining in the opening half.
The offense abruptly stalled for Illinois College after that, however. Orlando Brown gave Lake Forest a 12-10 advantage with buckets on two straight possessions for the Foresters and that was the beginning of a 19-0 run that put the visitors ahead, 27-10, with 8:46 to go in the half.
Brad Herrmann finally ended the run with a three-pointer, but Lake Forest's lead was 46-29 at the break.
A pair of Bauer three-pointers in the opening minutes of the second half helped the Blueboys get back within 13 at 50-37, but Lake Forest promptly reeled off 10 straight to take a 60-37 lead with less than 15 minutes to play. The lead grew as high as 28 points with eight minutes to go before Illinois College began chipping away.
Herrmann and Bauer bookended a 12-2 run with three-pointers that made it 79-61 with 5:55 remaining and the Blueboys got as close as 13 points late in the game after
John Taylor made consecutive three-pointers. It was a case of too little, too late for IC though. Only 1:40 remained after Taylor's second three-pointer and the Blueboys wouldn't score again the rest of the way.
Max Stutsman ended the game with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds to pace Illinois College in each category. Off the bench, Bauer chipped in 12 points on four three-pointers and Herrmann had 11 points on 3-of-4 from distance. Schappaugh added nine points and a team-high five assists.
Illinois College will be back home for its next game on Jan. 16, taking on Beloit College at 1 p.m. inside Sherman Gymnasium.
