Lady Blues sweep Westminster

The Illinois College softball team won a pair of games against visiting Westminster College on Tuesday to complete its first doubleheader sweep of the season. The Lady Blues won by scores of 7-6 and 5-2.

A one-out grounder off the bat of Paige Hughey scored Sierra McDonald for the walk-off winner in the first game. Courtney Kwasnitza, Paige Meyer and Anna Jacobs recorded two hits each in the opener, while Brittney Fanella, Hughey and Jacobs drove in two runs each. McDonald scored three runs. Paige Cullison had a triple, scored two runs and stole two bases.

Alese Speckhart was the winning pitcher in the opener. She allowed six runs (four earned) with only one walk in seven innings.

Cullison was 2-for-2 with an inside-the-park home run, a triple, three runs and two RBIs in the nightcap. Meyer had a two-run double and Kwasnitza scored a pair of runs.

Leah Shumaker got the win in the second game after allowing two runs (one earned) over 6 1/3 innings. Amanda Price recorded the final two outs for her first save of the season.

The Lady Blues improved to 5-9 with the wins. They will play four conference games over the weekend in Iowa, with a doubleheader at Grinnell College on Saturday and a doubleheader at Cornell College on Sunday.
