Box Score CHICAGO – The Illinois College men's basketball team was tripped up in its first road contest this season, losing a 90-66 decision to North Park University on Saturday night.
Tim Schappaugh led three Blueboys in double-figures with 16 points, but the Vikings shot 54 percent from the floor and forced 20 IC turnovers to pick up the win. The Blueboys fall to 1-3 on the season.
Early on, Schappaugh and
Brad Herrmann were setting the pace for Illinois College. Both players had five points in a 10-0 IC run that put the Blueboys ahead, 15-9, with 14:39 remaining in the first half. North Park came back to lead on the strength of its three-point shooting. Garrett Gatz hit 3-of-5 from beyond the arc in the first half and the Vikings were 6-of-14 as a team, helping the team to storm back from the deficit. After
Blake Shehorn scored inside with 5:13 to go, giving IC a 24-21 lead, North Park closed the half on a 16-0 run. The Vikings forced two turnovers and scored two layups in the final 10 seconds to take a surge of momentum into the break.
In the second half, North Park hit 21-of-33 (64 percent) from the field, negating a 58 percent shooting half from the Blueboys. With the Vikings being equally effective on offense, Illinois College was never able to pull closer than 12 points. Two Schappaugh free throws with 4:01 to play made it 74-62, but North Park followed with an 8-0 run to ice the game.
Joining Schappaugh in double-figures for Illinois College was
Brandon Fishburn with 15 points and
Mitchell Patterson, who had 10 points and team highs with six rebounds and three steals. Juwan Henry led all scorers with 23 points and picked up a double-double with 12 assists. Jordan Robinson also had a double-double with 13 points and 13 boards.
Illinois College returns to Midwest Conference action on Dec. 6 as Lawrence University pays a visit to Sherman Gymnasium. Tip-off of the contest will begin at approximately 3 p.m. following the conclusion of the women's game.
