The Illinois College softball team won its 20th game of the year and finished the regular season tied with Cornell College for the second spot in the Midwest Conference's South Division, but lost out on a bid to the MWC Tournament on a tiebreaker, as the Lady Blues split a doubleheader with Cornell on Sunday. IC lost the opener, 3-1 in 10 innings, before bouncing back to win the second game, 8-6.
With both teams having the same number of points, and having split their two contests on Sunday, the tiebreaker went to in-division winning percentage, which Cornell took with a 6-4 mark against MWC South competition. IC, which had a 5-5 mark against MWC South foes, had made up points by going a perfect 5-0 at the Midwest Conference Classic earlier this month.
Amanda Price allowed just three runs over 10 innings in the opener.
Alese Speckhart had two hits and Brittany Fanella drove in the Lady Blues' only run.
Jaci Forsythe had three hits, while
Courtney Kwasnitza,
Paige Cullison,
Anna Jacobs and Fanella all tallied two apiece in the second game. Forsythe drove in two runs and Cullison scored three runs.
Alese Speckhart earned the pitching win, allowing six runs (three earned) over five innings of work.
The Lady Blues finished the season with an overall record of 20-14 and a Midwest Conference mark of 10-5.
Megan Jagodzinski,
Kelly Rehr and Forsythe were honored before the game as part of Senior Day festivities, which concluded with the engagement of Jagodzinski and IC alum Cory Joergens when Joergens proposed at home plate before the game.
