Lady Blues Fall to 24th-Ranked Wash U

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Illinois College softball team dropped a pair of games to Wash U in the season-opening doubleheader for both teams on Saturday at the Wash U Softball Field.

Wash U entered the day ranked 24th in the latest NCAA Division III poll.

Game 1: Wash U 8 IC 1
The Lady Blues took an early lead in the top of the second inning when Elysia Hand stole home for the first run of the season.  IC was able to hold that advantage until the Bears erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Wash U added an insurance run in its half of the sixth inning to close out the scoring.

Hand had a hit and a walk while Alivia Darbe added the Lady Blues' other hit in the contest. Jordan Closs took the loss, working four innings in the circle. She allowed five runs (one earned) on three hits with a pair of strikeouts. Cambria Currie closed out the game, pitching the final two innings with a strikeout.

Game 2: Wash U 3 IC 2
Wash U rallied with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the sweep.

As it did in the opener, IC plated the game's first run, this time in the first inning when Hand singled to score Currie, who had walked earlier in the frame.  The Bears tied the game in the fourth with a solo home run before the Lady Blues' Gabby Miller drilled a solo shot of her own in the top of the fifth to give IC a 2-1 lead.

The IC offense was paced by Hand, Miller, Currie, and Kendall Cole, who all recorded hits. Avery Fritz went the distance in the circle for the Lady Blues, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts in her 6.1 innings of work.
