IC Pitching Shuts Down Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. – Jordan Closs tossed a perfect game before Taylor Henry and Avery Fritz combined on a one-hitter as the Illinois College softball team swept a Midwest Conference doubleheader from Monmouth, 13-0 and 2-0, on Friday.

The Lady Blues are now 19-15 overall and 8-2 in conference play. Monmouth dropped to 4-26 and 0-8.

Game 1: IC 13 MC 0
Closs' perfect game was highlighted by 14 strikeouts.

IC provided all the offense Closs would need with a run in the second inning when Delaney Melton scored on a Fighting Scot error. The Lady Blues added two more in the third inning on RBI singles from Kayla Serpa and Kendall Cole.

Raegan Rezba's sacrifice fly in the fourth plated another IC run before the Lady Blues exploded for nine more in the seventh. Ezzy Mauermann's grand slam was the big blow. Serpa, Henry, and Elysia Hand also had RBI in the frame.

Game 2: IC 2 MC 0
Henry allowed a leadoff single and then shut down the Fighting Scots for the next 6 1/3 innings with a strikeout and three walks. Fritz worked the final 2/3 of an inning and recorded a strikeout.

The Lady Blues scored the eventual game-winning runs in the top of the seventh inning when Hand drilled a solo home run, and Tabitha Olsen recorded an RBI single.

Up Next
The Lady Blues continue Midwest Conference play, traveling to Cornell for a doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon. The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played in Jacksonville but was moved to Mt. Vernon due to the forecast of extended inclement weather in Central Illinois on Saturday.
