WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Illinois College softball team used a late rally in the second game of the day to post a split on the final day of its annual Florida trip on Friday.
IC dropped the opening game of the day, 10-2 to Mount St. Joseph's but then scored a pair of runs in its final at-bat to beat Alverna, 3-2.
The Lady Blues are now 5-5 overall.
Mount St. Joseph's 10 IC 2
Mount St. Joseph's jumped out to a 4-0 lead, scoring two times in the first inning and once each in the second and sixth. IC scored both of its runs in the sixth when
Taylor Henry stroked a two-run single to cut the lead in half.
MSJ put the game out of reach by plating six runs in the seventh inning.
The Lady Blues got two hits each from Henry,
Elysia Hand, and
Cambria Currie.Â
Currie started in the circle for IC and tossed the first three innings. She allowed three runs on eight hits and had a strikeout. Henry worked 3 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits, and
Haley Flores finished the contest, giving up three runs on two hits.
IC 3 Alvernia 2
The contest was a pitching duel in the early innings before the Lady Blues broke through in the fifth inning when
Kayla Serpa singled on a bunt and
Raegan Rezba came around to score from second base. Alvernia tied the game in its half of the sixth inning.
IC plated the game-winning runs in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Henry and an RBI double by
Kendall Cole. That second run proved to be valuable as Alvernia scored once in the bottom of the seventh before the Lady Blues closed out the inning for the victory.
Jordan Closs went the distance in the circle for IC, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out five.
