Lady Blues Sweep in Home Opener

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College softball team made the most of its first appearance of the season at Jessica Kamp Field, sweeping Westminster, 7-4 and 6-5, on Saturday.

The Lady Blues are now 7-5 overall.

Game 1: IC 7 Westminster 4
IC sprang out of the gate with a three-run first inning with the big blow being a Taylor Henry two-run double. Delany Melton then drove in Henry with a sacrifice fly. The Lady Blues added a single run in the third when Kendall Cole scored on Cambria Currie's sacrifice.

Two IC runs in the sixth put the game away thanks to an RBI double by Cole and an RBI single from Melton.

The Lady Blues rapped out 11 hits in the game and got two each from Kayla Serpa, Brooke Loveall, Elysia Hand, and Cole.

Jordan Closs earned the win in the circle, going 6 2/3 innings allowing four runs (one earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts. Ashley Groves recorded the final out of the game to earn her first save.

Game 2: IC 6 Westminster 5
Westminster was up 2-0 in the third inning when IC exploded for five runs. Halie Williams and Alyssa Teixeira both walked with the bases loaded while Lilly Siller stroked a two-run single and Hand added an RBI single to plate the five runs.

The Blue Jays clawed back to tie the game at five before IC scored the eventual game-winning run when Hand scored on a Westminster error in the fifth.

Hand was the offensive leader, recording two hits and scoring two runs to go along with her RBI.

Avery Fritz threw the final 3 2/3 innings in relief of Henry to earn the victory and move to 4-0 on the season. She allowed a run on four hits with two strikeouts.
