WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Illinois College softball team broke out the bats on Thursday, scoring 23 runs in posted a sweep during the annual spring trip to Florida.
IC rallied from a five-run deficit to blast Heidelberg 12-5 in the opening contest and then rolled to an 11-3 win over Adrian in the nightcap.
The Lady Blues are now 4-4 overall.
IC 12 Heidelberg 5
Heidelberg scored the first five runs of the game before IC began its offensive onslaught with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Elysia Hand stroked a two-run single to start the rally before
Ezzy Mauermann recorded a sacrifice fly to plate the third run.
The Lady Blues put the game away by exploding for nine runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Alyssa Teixeira put IC ahead with a two-run single.
Shelby Seiler followed with a two-run double.
Kayla Serpa and
Brooke Loveall then walked with the bases loaded to score two more before
Taylor Henry capped off the inning by blasting a three-run double.
Serpa, Loveall, and Henry all had a pair of hits to lead the 12-hit IC attack.
Avery Fritz, who pitched 3 1/3 shutout innings in relief of starter
Jordan Closs, picked up the win. Closs had six strikeouts in her 3 1/3 innings of work.

The Lady Blues posted a five-spot in the top of the first.
Kendall Cole opened the scoring with a two-run single.
Delaney Melton then smacked a two-run double and later scored herself on a steal of home. IC then added another run in the second when
Megan Doolittle reached via an error, allowing Cole to score.
Adrian cut the lead to 5-3 before IC put the game away with three in the fourth and two more in the fifth.
In the fourth, Melton and
Emma Hardiek each had RBI singles and Mauermann walked with the bases loaded to bring another run home.
Halie Williams' two-run double closed out the scoring.
Melton and Henry each had two hits for IC. Henry also went the distance in the circle, allowing just three hits and recording a strikeout in her five innings of work.

The Lady Blues will close out the Florida portion of the season by facing Mount St. Joseph (8:00 a.m. CST) and Alvernia (10:15 a.m. CST) on Friday in Winter Haven.
