CLERMONT, Fla. – The Illinois College softball team split a pair of games on Tuesday, topping Marietta 10-1 before falling to Benedictine 7-3 in the nightcap.
The split moved the Lady Blues to 3-6 in the young season.
In the opener, IC jumped ahead early, scoring two runs in the first inning when
Kayla Serpa had an RBI single and
Cheyenne Anderson recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice.
Calynn Gicante drove in another with a ground out in the third before
Taylor Henry drove one in with a single. In the fourth, Gicante added another RBI with a single to push the IC advantage to 5-0.
After Marrietta tallied in their half of the fourth, the Lady Blues put the game away with five runs in the top of the sixth. Henry walked with the bases loaded to bring in one and
Maddie Murphy singled in another before
Jaycie Edwards clubbed a bases loaded double to drive in three.Â
Serpa paced the offense with three hits and three runs scored while
Julia Drake scattered five hits and struck out eight in the circle to earn the win.
The nightcap saw Benedictine jump out to a quick 3-0 lead after 1 ½ innings. IC cut the margin to 3-2 on back-to-back triples by Erin Hand (who drove in
Claudia Adam) and
Michelle Maag.
The Eagles answered with two more runs in the third to make it 5-2. The Lady Blues got one back in their half of the third on an
Emma Hardiek ground out but that would close out the scoring for IC. Benedictine plated two insurance runs in the sixth to provide the final margin.
Serpa, Anderson and Hand all had a pair of hits for IC to lead the offense. Hailey Crouch took the loss in the circle, working three innings and giving up five runs on nine hits. Henry finished the final four frames, allowing two runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts.
The Lady Blues will be off until Thursday when they return to Kissimmee to face Marian at 1:45 p.m. and Aurora at 4:15 p.m.
