GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell used a late surge to post a 118-101 victory over Illinois College in a Midwest Conference men's basketball contest on Wednesday at Darby Gym.
IC fell to 19-4 overall and 11-3 in the league while the Pioneers improved to 17-5 and 11-3. The win allowed Grinnell to sweep the season series as it defeated the Blueboys, 95-89, on January 27th in Jacksonville.
Matt Thompson led all scorers with 26 points while
Jake Mazrimas had a 20-20 double-double with 20 points and a game-high 21 rebounds.
Austin Robinson came off the bench to score 15 points and grab 10 rebounds while
Jahkeis Tippett scored 12 for IC which played without starting post
Nestor Daboin.
The first half was back-and-forth as the lead changed hands eight times in the first 20 minutes of play. Grinnell used a five-point run in the final 36 seconds of the period to take a 66-62 lead into halftime.Â
The second half belonged to the Pioneers. The Blueboys were able to tie the game at 69 with 17:03 remaining but Grinnell pushed the lead to 83-73 with 13:54 to go. IC made another run and got within two (90-88) with 8:55 left but the Pioneers outscored IC 28-13 from that point on to put the game away.
IC returns to Sherman Gymnasium Saturday for the final regular season home contests when Lake Forest comes to town. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m. and the Blueboy senior class will be honored prior to the game.
