Fast Start Fuels IC Past Grinnell

GRINNELL, Iowa – The Illinois College football teams scored four first quarter touchdowns and cruised to a 56-14 victory over Grinnell in a Midwest Conference contest at Rosenbloom Field on Saturday.

The victory moved the Blueboys to 6-2 overall and 5-2 in the Midwest Conference. The Pioneers dropped to 2-6 overall and 2-5 in league play.

IC exploded in the opening quarter, running out to a 28-0 lead after 15 minutes of play. The scoring started when Tanner Spencer bursts 49 yards for a score. Kyle Leonard added to the advantage when he latched on to a 4-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Destin Chance. The final two IC scores came from the combination of Chance and Collin Brunstein. The first score came from one yard out and the second from three yard.

Grinnell opened the second quarter with a score before Chance and Will Campbell connected from 31-yards out and the Blueboys took a 35-7 lead into halftime.

After the Pioneers opened the second half with a score, Brunstein and Chance hooked up on a 14-yard touchdown connection to make it 42-14.

IC's Lleyton Miller opened the fourth quarter with a 21-yard touchdown scamper before Chance and Brunstein closed out the scoring for the day, this time from 20 yards.

The Blueboys' Toby McTamney was perfect on all eight of his extra points.

Chance finished the day 25-for-40 for 292 yards and six touchdowns. He also rushed 12 times for 97 yards. 
 
IC had a pair of 100-yard rushers as Spencer collected 152 yards on his 16 carries while Miller added 106 on his 10 totes.

Brunstein lead the receiving corps with 77 yards on seven catches and four scores. Trey Birdsong added 51 yards on his four catches while Spencer had four for 49 yards. Campbell had three catches for 48 yards and a score while Lonard had 48 yards on his six receptions and a score.

The Blueboys' defense was led by Drake Stuart who had 11 tackles (one for loss) while Derrick Jones added 10. Malik Byndom had a pair of interceptions as well.

The Blueboys have now won 14 of their past 16 regular-season games, and IC has also won 19 of its last 23 games overall… the Blueboys are averaging 58.4 points per game in their past 13 regular-season contests dating back to last season. This year, IC has already scored 416 points (52 ppg)… Brunstein, the first player in IC history to have 4,000 career receiving yards, now has 4,511 yards and 69 TD receptions (both school records)... he is the only player in IC history to catch over 60 touchdown passes. Collin also now has 197 career catches which is fourth in IC history and needs 12 to vault into third place. Chance now has 104 career TD passes and needs three to become the school's all-time leader... McTamney has made 27 straight extra points over the past three games.
