Blueboys Travel To Face Cornell College In Conference Opener

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa- The Illinois College Blueboys traveled to face Cornell College in their Midwest Conference opener Friday night. The Blueboys suffered two losses to the Rams 2-5 and 9-11. 

GAME 1- Illinois College 2, Cornell College 5

The team was led by Jesse Stout at the plate finishing two for three on the day with one run scored. Griffin King represented the Blueboys on the mound pitching 7.0 innings and totaling five strikeouts while only allowing one earned run.  

Peyton Phillis cut the Ram's lead to 2-3 after stealing home in the top of the eighth inning. The Rams answered by scoring two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to claim the win in game one. 

GAME 2- Illinois College 9, Cornell College 11

The second game of the day featured both teams' talented offenses in a high-scoring MWC battle. Phillis led the way for IC going two for four at the plate with an RBI and three runs scored. Jaydon Davis also made an impact finishing two for five at the plate with two runs batted in and two runs scored. 

A run by Davis would make the game 9-10 with Cornell ahead in the top of the eighth inning. The Rams would hold off the Blueboys comeback to claim the sweep in the conference opener. 

Andrew Wieneke suffered the loss at the mound after pitching 2.0 innings with five strikeouts. 

The Blueboys will continue their road trip facing the Rams on Saturday, 3/25. The game may be moved to Sunday, 3/26 due to weather conditions.
