Mt. Vernon, Iowa – Illinois College kicked off the Midwest Conference portion of the season with a resounding 83-55 victory over Cornell Tuesday evening at the Small Athletics & Wellness Center.
IC, which received 68 votes good for 26th place in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, improved to 6-0 on the season and 1-0 in league play. The six straight wins to open the season marks the best start in school history. Cornell moved to 2-5 and 0-1.
After being named the conference's Performer of the Week on Monday,
Jake Mazrimas picked up where he left off last week by leading IC with 28 points and 16 rebounds. It was Mazrimas' second consecutive double-double.
Buzz Ritzel added 22 points, going 8-for-11 from the field, and
Josh Harris chipped in with 12 points and five assists for IC which shot .530 (35-66) while holding Cornell to just .339 (21-62).
The Blueboys never trailed in the contest and enjoyed their biggest advantage of the opening half at 17 (35-18). Another key factor to the early lead was IC boasting an 11-0 advantage in points off the bench. The second half saw the Blueboys continue to blow the game open, posting their biggest advantage of the evening at 39 (79-49) with 2:23 to play.
IC returns to conference play on Saturday, traveling to Ripon for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
