PLYMOUTH, Wis.- The Illinois College Blueboys football team opened their season on the road against Lakeland University Thursday night. IC earned a huge win defeating the Muskies with a final score of 38-20 to advance to 1-0 overall this season.
The Blueboys relied on tough defensive play to claim the win in their season opener. Back-to-back 40-plus yard interception returns for touchdowns by
Charlie Patterson and
Collin Brunstein put the Blueboys up early 14-6 in the second quarter. A field goal by
Toby McTamney would make the score 17-6 heading into halftime.
IC opened up the second half with even more defensive pressure. Another interception by
Kyle McCalla was returned 73 yards for a touchdown to put IC ahead 24-6 with 11:52 in the third quarter. The Blueboys offense took care of the rest putting together two scoring drives late in the game to seal the win.
IC was led on offense by Quarterback
Jack Hanauer making his debut with the Blueboys. Hanauer finished the game with 99 yards passing and one touchdown through the air.
Trevor Smalls was the team's leading rusher with 68 total yards and one rushing touchdown.
KJ Corley made his presence known with four catches for 35 yards and one touchdown reception.
The Blueboys will begin conference play by hosting the University of Chicago on Saturday, 9/10 at 1:00 PM in their home opener.
