CHICAGO, Ill.- The Illinois College Blueboys baseball team traveled to take on the University of Chicago in a Sunday doubleheader today. The team earned a win in both games to sweep the Maroons and improve to 3-9 overall as they head into conference play.
Game 1- Illinois College 2, University of Chicago 0
The Blueboys would look to take an early lead over the Maroons. The team would score first in the third inning after
Peyton Phillis was able to sneak to home on a throwing error. The Blueboys would extend their lead after a balk brought in a run by
Tyler Blum to make the score 2-0.
IC would hold off the Maroons comeback attempts to earn the win in game one.
Griffin King would earn the win for the Blueboys at the mound pitching all seven innings earning five strikeouts in the contest.
Game 2- Illinois College 10, University of Chicago 7
The second game of the day proved to be a thriller with both teams producing offensively. Illinois College would strike first with a run by
Caleb Uselton in the second inning.
Kellen Blum would bring in another run after a double by King to extend the lead. King was able to score after a sacrifice bunt by
Tyler Blum to cap off an impressive second inning by the Blueboys.
The Maroons would answer with three runs of their own in the bottom of the second to tie the score at three a piece. The University of Chicago would then take the lead in the bottom of the third with a two run single to jump ahead 5-3.
Bailey Reed would bring the Blueboys right back in it with a two run homerun in the top of the fifth that would bring in a run by Phillis and tie the game 5-5.
The momentum continued to swing back and forth as the Maroons would take the lead right back on another two run single in the bottom of the fifth.
The Blueboys were able to secure the win with an explosive sixth inning offensively. IC would score five runs in the inning with the game winning score coming from
Bailey Reed after a single by
Cade Hennemann.
Christian Stawar earned the win for IC at the mound in game two pitching 1.2 innings and recording one strikeout.
The Blueboys will now begin Midwest Conference play hosting Knox College on Saturday, 4/3 at 12:00 PM and 2:30 PM.
