MOUNT VERNON, Iowa- The Illinois College women's basketball team traveled to take on the Cornell College Rams on Saturday. The Lady Blues would improve to 3-2 after defeating the Rams with a final score of 71-68.
IC would have three athletes earn double digits in scoring at the end of the game.
Lilly Pepper led the team with 16 points and seven rebounds in the contest. Other double figure scorers included
Junie Zirkelbach and
Madison Schoenfeld with 12 points each.Â
The Lady Blues got off to a slow start with the Rams jumping to an early lead. Cornell would stand ahead of the Lady Blues 18-14 at the end of the first quarter. The Rams would maintain their lead heading into halftime with the score at 34-30.Â
Illinois College would come out of the locker room determined to take control of the competitive contest. After back to back made layups by
Kendra Bass, the Lady Blues would take their first lead since the beginning of the game with the score at 40-38 with 6:04 left in the third quarter.Â
The game remained close with the score tied 68-68 with just 38 seconds left in regulation. Pepper was able to make a clutch jump shot to put her team up by two with just 31 seconds remaining. The Lady Blues would hold off the Rams in the final seconds to take the win.Â
The Lady Blues will travel to face Eureka College in their next contest on Thursday, 2/25 at 7:30 PM.
