JACKSONVILLE, Ill.- The Illinois College Lady Blues earned a victory over the Greenville University Panthers in their first game of the season with a final score of 73 to 67.
Illinois College was led by
Junie Zirkelbach who finished the game with 19 points, three assists, and three rebounds. Other double digit scorers included
Lilly Pepper with 15 and
Krista Bass with 14.
Ashlyn Wightman led the team on the boards securing 10 rebounds in the team win.
Greenville started the game off aggressive jumping to a 10 point lead early in the first quarter. After a couple baskets from
Krista Bass to end the quarter, the Lady Blues found themselves at a nine point deficit trailing 18 to 11.
In the second quarter, the Lady Blues were able to erase the deficit after an 11-0 run to take the lead over the Panthers. After multiple lead changes, the Lady Blues trailed the Panthers 27-26 heading into the locker room for halftime.
The second half proved to be an even contest between both teams. The Lady Blues were able to jump ahead on a 6-0 run heading into the final quarter with the score at 48 to 41. Illinois College would increase their lead after back to back three point field goals by
Megan Price to put them ahead 63-49 with just 4:19 to go. The team would hold off the Panthers in the final minutes to earn the victory in their season opener.
The Lady Blues will look ahead to face the Greenville Panthers on the road this Saturday, 2/13 at 2:00 PM.
