APPLETON, Wis. – The Illinois College women's soccer team fell to Lawrence University, 1-0, in overtime in the Midwest Conference opener for both teams. The loss sends IC to 5-4-0 (0-1-0 MWC), while the Vikings improve to 6-3-0 (1-0-0 MWC).
The Lady Blues had
Charlotte Crofton to thank for staying in the match as long as they did. The senior goalkeeper ended with 18 saves on the day, including eight in the first half as Lawrence outshot IC by a 14-1 margin.
Annie Burns had the lone shot on target in the first 45 minutes for Illinois College, but it was saved by Sarah Yochem.
Pressure continued to rain down on Illinois College in the second half. Jackie Blake forced Crofton into a pair of saves early on and Blake would later ring the crossbar with a shot. For the Lady Blues, trying to play on the counter resulted in just one shot on target from
Ashley Brokaw and another effort from
Kaylee Andrea that sailed high.
With time ticking down in the extra session, Lawrence was able to find a bit of space down the right wing and play a ball low into the box. A shot from Adrianna Hudyma on her first touch just barely found a corner to beat Crofton and give the Vikings the win.
Illinois College continues MWC play tomorrow morning, facing Ripon College at 11 a.m.
