JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College women's tennis team held leads in all three doubles matches but went into singles facing a 2-1 deficit against Monmouth College on Tuesday evening. That one-point hole turned out to be the difference as the Lady Blues and Fighting Scots split six singles matches, giving the visitors a 5-4 win at the Bellatti Tennis Complex.
In doubles, only
Sally Hixson and
Sophia Roth were able to turn their lead into an Illinois College point. The pair earned an 8-3 win in the No. 1 match over Emma Johanns and McKenzie DeVilder. At Nos. 2 and 3, Monmouth rallied back late in each for two 8-6 victories.
A win at No. 5 singles extended Monmouth's lead to 3-1, but Illinois College rallied back to tie the score at 3-3 following quick wins at No. 2 from Hixson and No. 4 from
Kalisa Goertz. Moments later, the Fighting Scots went back ahead thanks to a victory in the No. 3 singles match. With two matches left, Monmouth wrapped up the victory at No. 6, negating an eventual 7-5, 6-2 win by
Sophia Roth over Johanns in the No. 1 singles match.
Illinois College returns to the Bellatti Tennis Complex on Sunday, hosting Fontbonne University at 11 a.m.
