JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College women's tennis team fought hard on Wednesday evening in its season-opening match but came up short in an 8-1 decision to Millikin University. The Lady Blues drop to 0-1 on the season and will have more than a week to continue preparations for their Midwest Conference openers.
Millikin took a 3-0 lead after doubles to take a big early advantage.
Sally Hixson and
Sophia Roth put up the biggest fight in doubles, taking the No. 1 match down to the wire before Brianna Barconi and Shelby Jones could claim the point.
In singles action, Hixson put IC's lone point of the night on the board with an impressive 6-2, 6-2 win over Barconi in the No. 2 match.
Kalisa Goertz was close in the No. 4 match, but Danielle Beard ultimately claimed the point with a 6-3, 7-6 win.
Madelyn Deardorff also showed some fight in a 6-4, 6-2 defeat to Katie Cooper at No. 5.
Illinois College will be back home at the Bellatti Tennis Complex on Sept. 7, hosting a pair of MWC matches. First up is a 9 a.m. match with Beloit College before wrapping up the day with Lake Forest College at 3 p.m.
