CARLINVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College women's tennis team fell to Blackburn College in its Spring season opener on Tuesday evening by a score of 5-4. The Lady Blues drop to 5-10 overall on the season.
The evening started off well enough for Illinois College. The Lady Blues were able to take a 2-1 lead after doubles with the No. 1 team of
Sally Hixson and
Sophia Roth winning, 8-4. The No. 2 team of
Madelyn Deardorff and
Jenny Montelongo were also victorious by a score of 8-3.
In singles, Blackburn was able to tie the score at 2-2 after a win at No. 6, but Hixson gave the lead back to Illinois College with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 2 over Emily Bechtold. After that, the Beavers were able to claim close wins at Nos. 1, 3, and 4 to clinch the victory.
Ashley Brokaw ended the day on a good note for the Lady Blues with a 6-7, 6-2, 10-4 win over Morgan Zobrist to win the No. 5 match.
Illinois College returns home to take on Westminster College (Mo.) tomorrow evening at 5 p.m.
