KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Trine University took a 4-0 lead early on, allowed Illinois College to come back and tie it, then took the lead for good on the first at-bat of the following inning as the Thunder held on for an 11-6 win over the Blueboys. Trine improves to 3-1 on the year, while IC drops to 1-4.
A hot start offensively for Trine saw the first six hitters reach either via a hit, walk or error. That allowed three runs to score in the top of the first and the lead reached 4-0 heading into the bottom of the third. That's when Illinois College responded back with RBIs in four consecutive at-bats from
Eli Fox,
Scott Kasting,
Bailey Reed and
Colin Dearing to knot the game up at 4-4.
Leading off the top of the fourth, Chase Hall homered to left field to make it 5-4. Another solo shot an inning later made it 6-4 and the Thunder plated two more in the sixth on a RBI single. The lead for Trine eventually went as high as six runs as the Thunder entered the bottom of the ninth with an 11-5 lead. Though Fox supplied Illinois College with a two-out double to cut it back to five, it was too-little, too-late for the Blueboys.
Quinn Miller took the loss on the mound for Illinois College. Fox led the hitters with a 3-for-5 day. Dearing and
Tim Sommerfeld each added two hits apiece.
The Blueboys play another single game tomorrow afternoon, facing Albion College at 1:30 p.m. (EST).
