Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ELSAH, Ill. – The Illinois College men's tennis team started its 2019 season with a 9-0 loss against a talented Principia College team, but came right back to even its record at 1-1 following a 7-1 victory over St. Louis College of Pharmacy.

Principia took a 3-0 lead on the Blueboys in doubles action, winning Nos. 2 and 3 doubles at love. Miguel Vaca and Jonah Wheeland put up a fight at No. 1 before Wyatt Dale and Greg Sovie pulled out an 8-5 victory. The Panthers then wrapped up the win by sweeping through the singles matches. Michael Connolly and Vaca came the closest to taking a set, each losing 6-3 in the opening set of their respective matches. Vaca eventually retired from the singles match, while Connolly lost to Sovie at No. 3, 6-1, in the second set.

The second match of the day allowed Illinois College to rebound. The Blueboys took an automatic 1-0 lead in the match as St. Louis College of Pharmacy was unable to field a No. 3 doubles team. Vaca and Wheeland posted an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles and Connolly and Jacob McQueen won at No. 2 doubles, 8-2.

Neither team fielded a player at No. 6 singles, so only five points were up for grabs as IC carried a 3-0 advantage into the singles competition. Moving up to No. 1 singles, Wheeland had a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Clark Berry. Connolly won his No. 2 match over Sheldon Kolawole, 6-2, 7-5. At No. 3, Cameron Doerr had an easy time of it with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over George Win. McQueen also nabbed a point for the Blueboys with a 6-1, 7-6(3) win over Naphtali Eke. The only point of the day for the Eutectics came at No. 5 where James Bamberger was able to defeat Connor McAndrew, 6-2, 6-1.

Illinois College has two weeks off from action until returning to non-conference play with a pair of matches in Dubuque, Iowa on Feb. 23. The Blueboys will take on the hosts, Loras College, at 9 a.m. that day, followed by a 2 p.m. match against North Central College.
