Women’s Soccer Shuts Out Lawrence for First MWC Victory

Two second-half goals were the difference as Illinois College blanked the Vikings, 2-0.

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College women's soccer team broke a scoreless deadlock with two second-half goals to seal the deal against Lawrence University for the Lady Blues' first conference win of the season. The victory propels IC to 5-6-0 (1-1-0 Midwest Conference).

Olivia Dobbs provided an early threat for Illinois College, forcing a save from the Lawrence keeper less than two minutes into the game. Following a shot from Lawrence's Lauren Turner, IC responded with six more shots, many of which came close to finding the back of the net.

The Lady Blues created many more chances, totaling 12 shots in the first half, but couldn't convert, leaving the game 0-0 heading into halftime. Lawrence mustered three attempts in the half.

The Vikings looked to pounce first in the second half as Kelli Quick and Wakana Komura registered shots of their own, but neither were put on goal. The Lady Blues finally broke through 12 minutes into the half, when a corner from Mychaela Bennett skipped through the box and found the feet of Carlee Fowler, who finished at the back post for her first goal of the season.

Illinois College doubled the lead in the 78th minute, with Katie Elmore cleaning up a misplayed ball by the goalkeeper for her team-high fifth goal of the year. Lawrence had a few more opportunities to score, but all were vanquished, securing a 2-0 Lady Blues victory.

Elmore totaled nine shots on the afternoon. Bennett and Dobbs each added four shots apiece. Lindsey Kormelink had four saves in the shutout victory.

Illinois College returns to the pitch tomorrow afternoon when the Lady Blues host Ripon College. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
