Doubles Looms Large as Women’s Tennis Falls to Lawrence

The Lady Blues and Vikings split six singles matches down the middle, but the visitors nabbed two of the three doubles matches to earn the 5-4 win.

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College women's tennis team battled Lawrence University all the way to the wire on Sunday, but two points early on for the Vikings in doubles was what the match hinged on and LU was able to come away with a 5-4 victory. The Lady Blues fall to 2-6 (1-4 Midwest Conference) on the year.

Sally Hixson and Sophia Roth started the day well with an easy 8-1 win in the No. 1 doubles match over Annie Harincar and Katie Nottberg. Lawrence responded with an 8-0 decision at No. 3 doubles to leave the match level at 1-1 and LU then took an 8-4 decision at No. 2 doubles over Madelyn Deardorff and Kalisa Goertz.

Illinois College handled its business at the top of the lineup in singles, winning at Nos. 1, 2 and 3. Lawrence took care of things in the bottom half however, winning at Nos. 4, 5 and 6. For the Lady Blues, Hixson downed Harincar at No. 1, 6-2, 6-4. Roth had no problem with Nottberg at No. 2, winning 6-2, 6-0. Goertz outlasted El Goblirsch at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-2. IC couldn't find another point though. Deardorff, AnnaBeth Batson and Mariana Babic all lost in straight sets in their respective singles matches, allowing Lawrence enough points to get the victory.

MWC play continues on the road on Sept. 18 for the Lady Blues with a 4 p.m. matchup at Knox College.
