ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Playing their first competitive match in more than a month, the Illinois College men's tennis team had no trouble with Webster University, downing the Gorloks by a score of 9-0. The Blueboys improved their record to 4-4 with the win, surpassing last year's win total and registering the most wins in a single season since the 2005-06 team won six matches.
The Blueboys seized control with a sweep of the doubles matches.
Miguel Vaca and
Michael Connolly won at No. 1, 8-1.
Cameron Doerr and
Rolando Salazar were 8-6 winners in the No. 2 doubles match. At No. 3,
Nazar Otunchiev and
Jacob McQueen were victorious by a score of 8-4.
Illinois College completed the shutout with triumphs in every singles match. Vaca defeated Riley Muren at No. 1, 6-0, 6-4. At No. 2, Otunchiev downed Austin Nation, 6-4, 6-0. Connolly got past Tom Shutzman at No. 3, 6-2, 6-4. Doerr eased past Charles McGee at No. 4, 6-1, 6-4. Salazar gutted out a third-set tiebreak win at No. 5, taking down Zach Bliss, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5. To close it out, McQueen got past Nicolas Andrade in the No. 6 match, 7-6(6), 6-2.
The Blueboys will look to move above .500 on the season when they open Midwest Conference play on Saturday. IC opens conference action at Ripon College on April 7 at 2 p.m.
