GALESBURG, Ill. – The Illinois College men's tennis team won for the fourth time in its last five matches on Wednesday evening, taking down Knox College by a score of 9-0 to improve to 7-5 (3-1 Midwest Conference) on the season. The Blueboys maintained their spot in third place in the MWC standings with the victory and matched the 1998 squad which also won seven matches. IC is now just a single win shy of tying for the most victories in a single season in program history.
Illinois College established a big lead early on, dominating doubles play for a 3-0 edge over the Prairie Fire.
Miguel Vaca and
Michael Connolly won their No. 1 match, 8-0.
Cameron Doerr and
Rolando Salazar were victorious in No. 2 doubles, 8-2.
Connor McAndrew and
Joe Mendala completed the doubles sweep with an 8-1 win at No. 3.
The Blueboys continued their strong play in singles, winning each match in straight sets. At No. 3, Connolly didn't give up a game in a 6-0, 6-0 throttling of Ganesh Uppalapu. Vaca was similarly unthreatened in a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jared Schwarz at No. 1.
At No. 2, Otunchiev got past Jeffrey Xue, 6-2, 6-2. Doerr outlasted Brad Newland for a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4. The Blueboys completed the clean sweep with a pair of 6-1, 6-2 victories at Nos. 5 and 6. Salazar took the win at No. 5 over Matt Bailey and McAndrew claimed the No. 6 point over Hank Horwitz.
IC faces St. Norbert College and Lawrence University in two big matches on April 14. The matches are currently scheduled for 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Bellatti Tennis Complex if the weather allows them to be played outdoors.
