GREENVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College men's tennis team took a 1-1 record away from Saturday's action, defeating Franklin College by a score of 6-3 in the team's opening match before losing an 8-1 decision to Greenville University to end the day. The Blueboys move to 3-4 on the season.
Illinois College jumped out to a 2-1 lead in doubles in its match against Franklin. Despite an 8-6 loss at No. 1 by
Michael Connolly and
Miguel Vaca, the Blueboys rallied with an 8-5 win at No. 2 by
Cameron Doerr and
Rolando Salazar, as well as an 8-6 win by
Nazar Otunchiev and
Jacob McQueen at No. 3.
In singles, Connolly had the easiest victory over a Grizzly opponent. In the No. 3 match, the junior secured a point with a 6-1, 6-2 win. Doerr added on a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5 and Vaca came away with a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 win in the top flight match. At No. 6, McQueen had the other point for IC with a 6-3, 1-6, 10-4 win in a third-set tiebreak.
Greenville remained undefeated with an 8-1 win over the Blueboys in the nightcap, improving to 7-0 on the season. The Panthers were challenged heavily in both the Nos. 1 and 3 matches, but eked out 9-7 victories in each.
Vaca took home IC's lone point of the match with a 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 win at No. 1 singles. The other five matches were won by Greenville in straight sets.
Illinois College returns home to the Bellatti Tennis Complex for an exhibition match against Lewis & Clark Community College on March 25 at 11 a.m.
