BROOKFIELD, Wis. – The Illinois College men's tennis team took a hard-fought 6-3 decision from Wisconsin Lutheran College on Sunday afternoon to pick up its first victory of the 2018 season. The Blueboys are now 1-2 on the year.
A solid start to doubles was a key component of the victory, as IC was able to jump out to a 2-1 lead.
Miguel Vaca and
Michael Connolly took the No. 1 doubles match by a score of 8-4. At No. 3,
Nazar Otunchiev and
Jacob McQueen had very little trouble in an 8-1 triumph.
Illinois College clinched the victory with four sweeps in singles. Vaca was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Ben Wordell in the No. 1 match. Connolly notched his second win of the day at No. 3 with a 6-3, 7-5 decision over Jeremy Ryno. McQueen completed a perfect day at No. 6 with a goose egg, 6-0, 6-0, over Jake Brandt.
Cameron Doerr also picked up a win in the No. 5 match, 6-4, 6-2. Both losses for IC in singles came in a third-set tiebreak.
The Blueboys stay on the road for one last match before making their home debut. IC will meet the St. Louis College of Pharmacy on Feb. 23 at 2:30 p.m.
