Momentum Stalls for Lady Blues in Defeat at Monmouth

An opening-minute own goal set the tone in a 6-0 Monmouth victory on Tuesday afternoon.

MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Illinois College women's soccer team couldn't make it two in a row on Tuesday afternoon, falling to Monmouth College on the road by a score of 6-0. Though the Lady Blues took out Cornell College on Sunday to knock the Rams from the ranks of the Midwest Conference unbeaten, an opening-minute own goal gave the Fighting Scots an immediate lead and they grew it from there. The defeat sends IC to 6-8-0 (2-3-0 MWC) on the year, while Monmouth improves to 7-5-0 (2-2-0 MWC).

The Fighting Scots were on the attack right from the opening kick and Jacie Reis earned her side a corner kick after only a few seconds. Off of the corner, the ball got knocked in off of an Illinois College defender and Monmouth was rewarded for its early pressure. Reis again proved to be a thorn in IC's side when she added her first goal of the match in the seventh minute to double the lead.

Monmouth added onto its lead twice more before halftime. Shelby Sims converted a penalty kick in the 17th minute to make it 3-0. Natalie Wolski ended the scoring in the first half with a goal in the 33rd minute.

In the second half, Reis scored her second goal of the match in the 50th minute and Hannah Lingle closed it out for Monmouth with a goal just before the hour mark.

Illinois College ended with four shots in the match. Chloe Kirbach had two of them (one on goal) and Katie Elmore had the others. Lindsey Kormelink was tagged with the loss despite making 10 saves on the day.

MWC action continues on the road this weekend for Illinois College, starting first with an Oct. 13 match at St. Norbert College at 1:30 p.m.
