GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Illinois College men's tennis team fell short against St. Norbert College on Saturday in a Midwest Conference tennis match, falling 7-2.
Miguel Vaca was a winner at both No. 1 singles and doubles for the Blueboys, but the Green Knights swept the remaining matches. St. Norbert improved its record to 6-5 (1-2 MWC), while IC falls to 1-6 (1-2 MWC).
St. Norbert started the day off well in doubles, claiming 8-1 wins at both the Nos. 2 and 3 matches. Vaca and
Michael Connolly got Illinois College on the board with a 9-8 (7-3) win over Ben Vande Zande and Brady Hicks.
The Green Knights quickly opened up a 4-1 lead as they swept to 6-0, 6-0 wins at Nos. 5 and 6 singles. Needing only one more point, a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2 by John Zanotti over
Rolando Salazar closed out the match.
In other matches, Alex Vandenberg held off a challenge from Connolly at No. 4, winning 6-1, 6-4. Hicks defeated
Nazar Otunchiev at No. 3, 7-5, 6-1. The lone point in singles for the Blueboys came from Vaca, who eased past Vande Zande, 6-3, 6-2.
Illinois College closes out the weekend with a 1 p.m. match in Appleton, Wis. tomorrow against Lawrence University.
