Cornell Takes MWC Finale from Blueboys

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Illinois College men's tennis team fell in its final Midwest Conference match of the season on Sunday morning, losing to Cornell College by a score of 8-1. The Blueboys wrap up MWC regular season play at 2-6 in the conference and are 3-11 with one final non-conference match to play.

Illinois College started flat and Cornell took advantage, claiming all three doubles matches to start the morning. The best showing came from Nazar Otunchiev and Rolando Salazar at No. 2 doubles, but they were defeated, 8-2.

The Rams wrapped up the match with victories at No. 2 and at No. 5 over Otunchiev and T.J. Lawal at love. Both Salazar and Collin Walter fell at No. 3 and No. 6 by scores of 6-0, 6-1. In the No. 1 match, Miguel Vaca lost to Gabriel Souza, 6-3, 6-2. The lone bright spot of the day for IC came from Michael Connolly in the No. 4 match. The sophomore fought back after dropping the first set to defeat Tom Greene, 1-6, 7-5, 10-7.

Illinois College will have Senior Day on Tuesday evening, hosting Millikin University at the Bellatti Tennis Complex at 5 p.m. The Blueboys then trek to Madison, Wis. for the MWC Championships on April 29 and 30.
