MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Illinois College men's tennis team was no match for Monmouth College on Wednesday night. The Scots defeated the Blueboys by a score of 8-1, with
Miguel Vaca winning the only point of the night for IC in his match at No. 1 singles. Illinois College is now 3-9 (2-4 Midwest Conference) for the season.
The closest doubles match came at No. 1 where
Michael Connolly and Vaca were defeated, 8-4. The Scots took a commanding 3-0 lead with 8-1 and 8-0 victories at Nos. 2 and 3.
In singles, Monmouth took the first five completed matches in straight sets.
Nazar Otunchiev and
Collin Walter put up the most fight in those matches. At No. 2, Otunchiev lost to Dylan Wong, 6-2, 6-1. At No. 6, Walter fell to Alex Martin, 6-1, 6-4.
Vaca improved to 11-3 in singles on the season with his win at No. 1 over Ronnie Griffin. Vaca was a 6-3, 7-5 winner and is now 4-2 in conference matches with two big tests coming this weekend.
Illinois College welcomes in MWC leaders Grinnell College to the Bellatti Tennis Complex on April 22 for a 2:30 p.m. match.
